Green Room/Imperium (Double Feature)
Michael Scott
Gather round ya'll it's the white power double feature today!
First things first lets kick this review off with the horror/thriller headliner. The flick is far darker than your average suspense film, and that's saying a lot.
Oh and I mean that literally speaking. Green Room should've been called "Dark Room" because most of the movie is pitch black with only a few shafts of light illuminating whatever character happens to be speaking or SPOILER ALERT getting mauled.
The set up is basically this: a literal band of misfits siphons their way to their next show which happens to be at a white supremacist club. They're not unphased but they need the cash, so they play their set despite having several bottles thrown at them. On their way out of the club, however, one of them sees something they shouldn't have and they end up getting held hostage by the club's workers.
The movie escalates steadily, with excellent use of violence and isolation to really hammer home the danger of the situation. One of the better "In a room" movies I've seen, though still pale in comparison to Cloverfield Lane. I refuse to say anymore for fear of actually spoiling anything, but I will say it's not for the squeamish or lighthearted.
Fire extinguishers are a girl's best friend.
Next up we have Imperium, the second of two Daniel Radcliffe movies I have seen where he does an American accent. This time around it's much more convincing though. That's not to say that Horns is a bad movie, far from it, but that's a horse of a different color ;)
D-Rad takes the role of an FBI agent turned spy who goes under cover to blow a white supremacist conspiracy wide open. But things are not always as they seem. It's really well paced and despite some middling reviews I've read, I really enjoyed it.
You do really get a good dose of white-power rhetoric though, so be ready. But actually that was one of my favorite parts. Green Room is a great movie, but the white supremacist stuff is really just flavoring, it doesn't really have anything to do with the story. Imperium is very much about the beliefs that these people have and it is fascinating to say the least.
It's apparently based off a true story, but I couldn't be bothered to look up the accuracy.
I watched these movies in the same day with a few hours in-between to do some chores. I think they go well together and I enjoyed each of them for different reasons. Check em out.
Now kiss.
