The Spill

The Spill is my blog. My place for movie reviews, thoughts, and probably the occasional rant. But hopefully not too much. Nobody cares amiright?

Heathers (Review)

Michael Scott

"Heathers" (1989) is a movie lost in time. It's the "Mean Girls" of the late 80s, but instead of the plastics being awful people who deserve the pranks pulled on them, they are innocent, if bratty, kids who are murdered by an unstable psychopath and her manipulative boyfriend.

Obviously meant to be a parody of teen emotions, jokes about school shootings and suicide hit too close to home in an era where such things are far more common.

The main character, Veronica, is a weak-willed, pretentious, imbecile who projects her failings onto others and then spends the second half of the movie lecturing the other characters.

For a movie seemingly adored by feminists, its main character may be the worst social rebel since Holden Caulfield. She hates girls for being popular and well-liked, talks down to men, and then shacks up with a school shooter who doesn't need much wit to convince her to straight-up murder multiple classmates. Then she attends, and laughs during their funerals....But who wouldn't for Christian Slater??

It's a case study of a movie. The filmmaking itself is decidedly 80s, and there is the occasional laugh-out-loud moment, but the utter disregard for proper plotting, and the sack of garbage who serves as the protagonist definitely lumps this movie into the "So bad, it's good" camp.

Watch at your own discretion.

We get it, they have fun and you don't. That means they're evil, right?
