The Conjuring 2 (Review)
Michael Scott
Despite being advertised as another generic jump-scare fest, "The Conjuring 2" is one of the better ghost movies I've seen, and certainly one of the best possession movies. It's got convincing actors, and beautiful sets. The production value is really very high.
My only real complaint with the film is that the evil spirit who serves as the main antagonist seems to have no motivation for attacking anyone. It sets up elaborate situations for it to pop out and scare the characters but there doesn't seem to be any purpose to do so, it is never stated to have a goal of any sort other than to terrorize a poor family. Don't get me wrong, I'd probably scare people too if I was an evil spirit, but that doesn't really fly when you're trying to tell a story.
Gripes aside, I really liked it. So much so that I might go back on my vow never to watch "The Conjuring" due to it's terrible trailer. Maybe it's worth a shot.
The scare scenes are really contrived, but they're well crafted and rarely cheap. The SFX are varied and top quality.
